I’ve always felt at home in the city that never sleeps.
But I can barely breathe in the town where I sleep.
Where I come from, there’s no such thing as gravel road or a farmer’s family.

No one ever said growing up would be easy;
but I guess no one ever grew up thousands of miles away from home.
I’m turning to spring… where the trees turn green;
the sky lights up the night, and my hands are warm.
I’m turning to spring, where I feel alive in the sunshine;
and I think it’ll start to feel like home
when my smile can’t hide behind pink lips, and the chill of winter is behind me.
holidays won’t be an option; and hours meant for sleeping won’t make my heart (and eyes) feel so heavy.
You told me I wouldn’t fall apart.
I won’t.
Lauren, I have just run across your blog and you are a marvelous writer. I know living in Iowa has been difficult for you after being in warm climates most of your life. I’m glad you are here doing the work you do. The morning crew at KCRG gets me through each morning in my second job at the YMCA. Unlike many who watch, I know how important the producer is to making a great newscast. You do an outstanding job getting everything to run so smoothly.
Keep up the great work. Maybe someday I can trot across the alley and actually get to meet you!!! BTW, spring is coming soon and then summer. Hopefully it will start to feel a little more like the weather you are used too soon enough.
Thanks for the great writing, especially the one today about your friend. It was very moving.
